Betters performance

Decline in provisions, indicating better recovery, ample provisions and improving assets helped narrow the loss

NEWDELHI, MAY 28 : Punjab National Bank (PNB) today reported a decline of Rs 4,750 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2019 and Rs 9975 crore for the FY'19 on high provisioning ,improving its performance from a year ago when it reported a loss of Rs 13,417 crore. Fall in provisions, indicating better recovery, ample provisions and improving assets helped narrow the loss. The bank's provisions declined to Rs 7,611 crore in January-March from Rs 2,970 crore.

The bank's dommestic business rose by Rs 1 lakh crore in FY to Rs 1145511 crore , recording a y-o-y growth of 11.1 per cent.

Domestic advances registered a growth of 14.1 per cent from Rs 430294 crore as on March 31,18 to Rs 490975 crore as on March 31, 2019.

The capital adequacy of the bank underv Basel 111 improved to 9.73 per cent as on March 31, 2019 as against 9.20 per cent from March 2018.

Improves provision coverage ratio

The bank improved its provision coverage ratio to 74.5 percent in March quarter against 68.9 percent in December quarter but net interest margin contracted sequentially to 2.45 percent against 2.64 percent.

Provisions for bad loans halved to Rs 10,071 crore in March quarter compared to Rs 20,353.1 crore in same period last fiscal, but increased sharply compared to Rs 2,754 crore reported in December .

Fresh slippages at the end of March quarter doubled to Rs 6,710 crore against Rs 3,324 crore in Q3FY19.NPAs decline" Net NPA ratio stood at 6.56 per cent against 8.22 per cent in the previous quarter of FY19

The bank's gross non-performing assets (NPA) declined to 15.5 per cent from 18.38 per cent while net NPAs declined to 6.56 per cent from 11.24 per cent. The net interest income rose 37.1 per cent from a year ago to Rs 4,200 crore in the March quarter. Net interest margin, a key measure of profitability, rose to 2.45 per cent from 1.90 per cent in the March quarter of 2018.
